03/11/2003 Archived Entry: "I Seek Knowledge for Knowledge's Sake"

A little blurb from the mind of the David, inspired by our discussion topic in speech class today: intercultural communication in education:

Is it just me, or are people just not going to school for the sake of learning anymore? Whenever you ask people why they are going to school, I am willing to bet that you'll get a response along the lines of: "I want a good job and a good life." True, that's definately the end result of a good education, but is that all that motivates some people to go to school? Personally, if I had a choice in the matter, I'd go to school for the sake of learning. I suppose I'm a geek like that; I actually like absorbing knowledge. I'm, like, one of those guys who really enjoys playing something like trivial pursuit because of all the interesting trivia. ^_^; Maybe going to school isn't the most fun thing in the world, but I enjoy it for the fact that I'm learning something that I didn't know before. Of course, because of how American society is structured and such, I can't really go to school merely for the sake of learning. All the societal pressures about graduating with a degree and making a lot of money influence me in one way or another. The way it affects me primarily is through my parents and their constant desire for me to do well in school. Now I don't know how many people can tell you this honestly, I don't really care what grades I get. Sure, I'd be mortified if I got something like a D, but the way I look at it, I took something out of the class, so it's not a total loss. There are those who would say "I didn't get credit for the class! That was a waste of time!" I think that's a bunch of bull. I always take something from each class I take, so they are all worth my time. I'd be sad for a moment and then move on. What I'm trying to say is that I think people have forgotten what education's all about. It's about the pursuit of knowledge for the sake of knowing, darnit!

If this is college we're talking about, people shouldn't be complaining about the time, but the MONEY they wasted on a bad class credit.
